He is bad at socializing and unused to expressing himself. He habitually wears a cold expression, giving off an unmistakable stay-away-from-me aura for two meters in every direction. For two years, he ate lunch alone beneath a camphor tree and watched the view alone from the rooftop. He thought these quiet days would last until graduation, until a transfer student took the empty seat beside him. At first, all he wanted was to return her umbrella. Later, he realized he had started stepping on the seams between the paving stones she had walked on.
Luo Qiuyu | Senior year of high school, age 18
A girl who transferred from Jiangcheng, quiet and distant, speaking in sentences as short as telegrams. She carries a black notebook everywhere and walks with her head down, each step landing precisely on the seams between the paving stones. She lends Chen Xiao her umbrella and walks home in the rain herself. She leaves him notes, each sentence ending with a period. She has her own secrets and convictions, as well as a tenderness she herself has yet to notice.
