Her father is a famed prince with a different surname, and her elder brother is a powerful general with an army of his own.

Her whole family are traitors preparing to rebel.

Duan Sisi is sent into the palace as an Imperial Consort with one task: poison the emperor, open the palace gates, and welcome her father to the throne.

But the moment Duan Sisi steps into the imperial kitchen, she can't bring herself to leave.

To get a bite of the imperial chef's beggar's chicken, she digs a hole in the middle of the night and accidentally buries alive an assassin who came to kill the emperor.

The emperor says tenderly, “My beloved consort even set a trap herself to protect me. I am deeply gratified!”

At a banquet, a princess from an enemy state slips a deadly Western Regions poison into the food. Duan Sisi mistakes it for juice and downs half a bottle.

The imperial physician drops to his knees and cries, “Her Highness the Imperial Consort is the heaven-blessed phoenix, immune to all poisons!”

Her father waits outside the palace for her signal to start the rebellion. After waiting three years,

he receives word that Duan Sisi has been made Empress and gained ten pounds.

Duan Sisi: “Burp. The food in the palace is great, Dad. Forget the rebellion and come over for a meal.”
