The protagonist is Lu Chen, an eighteen-year-old orphan who was abandoned at the gate of a Taoist temple. He was raised by his master Qingxuan Zhenren. On the surface, his personality is lazy and easy-going, but in fact he is thoughtful, affectionate and righteous, with a stubbornness that refuses to admit defeat. He grew up in a Taoist temple and had little interest in practicing cultivation. Instead, he was obsessed with tinkering with all kinds of weird magic weapons - all seemingly unorthodox gadgets, such as a gourd that sprays soap bubbles, a fan that can turn into a roast duck, and an incense burner that makes people sneeze. Master Qingxuan Zhenren is an old Taoist priest who is serious on the surface but is crazy about his disciples. Every time he sees Lu Chen's magic weapon, he blows his beard and stares in anger, scolding him for "not doing his job properly", but secretly helps him improve secretly. Lu Chen's growth arc is from a stubborn disciple who was ridiculed as a "waste" by his peers, to repeatedly performing extraordinary feats with these "unorthodox magic weapons", and finally realizing the true meaning of "there is no good or evil in magic weapons, and people's hearts are divided into good and evil", and became an alternative hero who saves the common people.
