Synopsis

A blank love letter records a poignant romance from the 1990s.

The night she got married, I sat leaning against the door of her dormitory all night.

A red double-happiness decoration was pasted on the door, still fresh, as if she had just put it there herself. Her wedding was on June 28, and Liu Guangming married her. I didn’t get back until July, three days too late.

Thirty-two years later, at her funeral, her daughter handed me an old envelope. The handwriting on it was mine, from 1992. I opened it and found a blank sheet of paper, a love letter I had sent her myself thirty years ago, with nothing written on it.

She kept that blank letter her whole life.

Later, one of her students told me she had been diagnosed with an illness that made it very difficult for her to have children. She said, “I can’t ruin his life.”

It turned out that every parting was never because of a lack of love. She had borne it all alone.
