Back to the Bitter Winter of 1978: I Head into the Mountains to Support My Family and Protect My Wife and Children

Big shot Lu Xiangyang spent his entire life alone. When he opened his eyes, he found himself back on a snowy day in 1978.

Back then, everyone despised him. His grandmother and uncle made life difficult at every turn, and when the family split, all he got was a dilapidated thatched hut, a frail wife, and a little girl who never had enough to eat.

Even in this desperate situation, he could spot hidden opportunities at a glance: ancestral gold bars hidden in the rafters, a century-old ginseng root beneath the old tree to the east, and his uncle secretly hoarding the family’s food rations.

Lu Xiangyang readily agreed to split the family. He dug up the gold, went into the mountains to gather ginseng, and hunted game.

While other families could barely fill their stomachs, his family had meat at every meal. He built up their savings with the mountains’ endless bounty, built a new house, bought all the big-ticket items, and put his greedy relatives firmly in their place.

He settled into a peaceful life with his wife and children, transforming from a down-and-out loafer into one of the village’s wealthiest families.
