The modern city is a glittering, bustling sprawl of towering skyscrapers. Few people realize that the world has already entered the Age of Declining Dharma.
For thousands of years, the offerings of incense have steadily dwindled. The divine power of Eastern ancient gods, from the Earth Gods and Lord Lao to the Buddhas, continues to drain away, and their spirits grow ever fainter. If this continues, they will vanish from the world entirely. Taking advantage of the lull, foreign gods and demons from across the ocean have quietly infiltrated the cities. They feed on the negative energy born of modern people's greed, anxiety, and restlessness, gnaw away at the nation's fortune, and plan to seize this land piece by piece.
The protagonist, Chen Yan, is an ordinary office worker. By day, he deals with work, overtime, and daily hassles, struggling to make ends meet. By chance, he awakens the source of the mortal world and learns to draw on the city's human warmth and bustle to restore the power of the ailing gods.
He travels between old streets and alleys and towering skyscrapers, awakening the gods one by one before they can perish. But once he has brought them back, there's a whole host of new problems to deal with. The old immortals have only just awoken and are bewildered by phones, food delivery, and city roads, leading to plenty of amusing mishaps as they adjust to urban life. After a thousand years apart, the gods of Daoism and Buddhism reunite, reminiscing about the past but also arguing endlessly over their differing beliefs. The newly born Confucian gods are full of zeal and insist that the gods should protect mortals, often debating right and wrong in the world with the old guard.
He must reconcile differences within the three traditions, help the gods adjust to modern society, and handle the strange incidents caused by monsters wreaking havoc in the city. At the same time, he must contend with Zeus, demons, angels, and other foreign forces, and foil the schemes they have laid.
