Online: Seventeen People

Have you ever downloaded one of those apps?

The kind that asks, “What’s your favorite color?” “What are you most afraid of?” “Where would you most like to go?” It’s free to download, with a clean interface and questions that feel like they’re coming from a friend.

You answer without thinking.

You won’t remember what you wrote.

Until one day, the app sends you a new question.

“Have you ever killed anyone?”

You think it’s a joke.

You answer, “Yes.”

Seventeen people across the country answered “Yes.”

They don’t know one another. They live in different cities, do different jobs, and lead completely different lives. Businesspeople, college students, programmers, single mothers, retired teachers… The only thing they have in common is that they all signed up for an app called Truth.

They all answered “Yes.”

The next day.

The first person died.
