The Tranquil Courtyard

In middle age, I was laid off, and every page of my thick stack of medical reports was covered in red flags. I spent entire nights tossing and turning, my heart pounding with anxiety. So I sold the cramped city apartment where I’d spent half my life feeling stifled, and took my wife back to the old country house our ancestors had left us.

While tidying the old house, I uncovered a family heirloom: an ancient book on food therapy. Along with the Daoist Iron Shirt and Longevity exercises, these were all I had to rely on.

No miracle doctor act, no System or supernatural golden finger. I simply tend to my peaceful little courtyard, grow vegetables, brew herbal wellness teas for every season, and simmer gentle, home-style medicinal dishes.

The neighbors around me struggle with suboptimal health, menopause, and emotional exhaustion, so I patiently share gentle ways to care for themselves. Countless city dwellers crushed by workplace pressure make a special trip to stay at my little courtyard and recuperate.

When faced with jealous, scheming relatives and health supplement peddlers preying on the elderly, I neither argue nor fight back. I let the visible improvements in people’s health, day after day, speak for themselves.

I ask for no great wealth or status, only the company of plants and the simple pleasures of three meals a day.

Far from the city’s endless rat race, amid the slow, rustic rhythms of country life, I soothe a lifetime of anxiety and find lasting peace within.
