Selected for Government Service

Chen Xing, twenty-six, with a master's degree from a prestigious university and selected for a government post, stepped through the doors of Haizhou's Development and Reform Commission.

A pile of old files in the corner of the office was the first stop on his political career. Over the next thirty-four years, from entering public service to retirement, he rose from Haizhou to the provincial capital. He served as a local chief and helmed a state-owned enterprise worth hundreds of billions.

Some soared to great heights; others fell into the abyss. He achieved brilliant successes and made serious mistakes. His story had its ups and downs, but his original purpose never changed.
