Gao Huan: From Huai Shuo Foot Soldier to Powerful Minister of Eastern Wei

Gao Huan, known by his Xianbei name He Liu Hun, was a formidable warlord who shook northern China during the Northern and Southern Dynasties. The de facto ruler of Eastern Wei, he laid the foundations of the Northern Qi dynasty.

His parents died when he was young, and he lived with his brother-in-law, Wei Jing. As an adult, he became a low-ranking border soldier, owning nothing and enduring the scorn of those around him.

By chance, he met Lou Zhaojun, a young lady from a prominent Huai Shuo family. Recognizing his talent, she defied their difference in status and her family's opposition, secretly gave him a large sum to help him propose, and sold her dowry to buy him warhorses. She was the most important benefactor of Gao Huan's life.

The great uprising of the Six Garrisons of Northern Wei erupted, plunging the land into chaos.

Unwilling to waste away in a border town, Gao Huan used his calm temperament and skill at commanding troops to gather a circle of loyal brothers around him, including Hou Jing, Duan Rong, and Sima Ziru. He first joined Du Luozhou and Ge Rong, but after seeing the rebels' narrow ambitions, he switched sides and joined the Northern Wei powerbroker Er Zhu Rong.

Step by step, he amassed troops and influence. When the Er Zhu clan fell into internal strife, he seized his chance, launched a counterattack, and destroyed the clan's power once and for all.

In the third year of Yongxi, Emperor Xiaowu of Northern Wei, unwilling to remain under Gao Huan's control, fled west to seek refuge with Yuwen Tai in Guanzhong.

Gao Huan took the opportunity to install Yuan Shanjian as emperor, move the capital to Ye, and establish Eastern Wei. From then on, he held all military and political power in the state, while the emperor and court were mere puppets. He became a true power behind the throne.

He faced off for years against Western Wei, controlled by Yuwen Tai in the west, and fought four pivotal battles at Xiao Guan, Shawan, Heqiao, and Mangshan, dividing northern China between them.

At home, he reformed the administration and eased tensions between Xianbei soldiers and the Han Chinese populace, strengthening the foundations of the state.

In the fifth year of Wuding, Gao Huan besieged Yubi in Western Wei but failed to take it despite a prolonged assault. After suffering heavy losses among his troops and becoming consumed by frustration, he fell ill and died.

His eldest son Gao Cheng and second son Gao Yang inherited his power. Several years later, Gao Yang forced Eastern Wei to abdicate and formally established Northern Qi, posthumously honoring Gao Huan as Emperor Qi Shen
