Love's Deepest Devotion

This is a story about love and responsibility, letting go for someone else’s sake, and holding back.

Lu Mingyuan and Shen Qinghe were childhood sweethearts in a small Jiangnan town. They spent summer days together beneath the cicadas’ songs and chased sunsets across a stone bridge, believing life would always go on that way.

But fate had other plans. The Lu family was struck by disaster, and to repay his father’s debts and rebuild the family business, Lu Mingyuan had no choice but to marry Su Nian, a wealthy heiress. After Shen Qinghe’s family fell on hard times, she made her own way and married Gu Lei, a colleague who had secretly loved her for years.

The two people who loved each other set off on separate paths in life.

Over the next twenty years, each fulfilled their duties in marriage and endured the joys and sorrows life brought. Lu Mingyuan made his mark in real estate, while Shen Qinghe established herself in foreign trade. They occasionally met at industry summits, and whenever their eyes met, a thousand unspoken words dissolved into restraint and silence.

It wasn’t that they had no chance to grow closer. They chose not to. They both understood that some love becomes hurtful once spoken aloud, and some people are best kept in the heart.

After his business venture failed, Gu Lei became a drunkard and eventually met his ruin. In her grief, Shen Qinghe finally said a long-overdue goodbye. Meanwhile, as time passed, Lu Mingyuan and Su Nian’s marriage grew from a union of duty into one of genuine understanding.

In the end, Shen Qinghe moved far away to Dali and began a new life. Lu Mingyuan continued with his career and family. Through a lifetime of restraint, they showed what it means to love deeply without clinging, and to care so much that you don’t intrude.

This is not a story about “being together.” It is a story about how two people can remain deeply in love without being together.
