The fifth day of the Lunar New Year, in the countryside of Northeast China. He Tianshun, a gambling addict, found a frozen girl by the roadside and brought her home. He named her Xu Xiaoman and put her to work for the family.
His son, He Zheng, hated his father’s incompetence, but after repeatedly injuring people in botched attempts, he was forced to flee. He and Xu Xiaoman escaped from Northeast China to the provincial capital, going from depending on each other for survival to letting each other down. He Zheng became another He Tianshun: depressed, unfaithful, and unwilling to take responsibility. Xu Xiaoman forgave him again and again, only to be disappointed again and again, until she finally slipped away.
Years later, they met again and got married...
At last, He Zheng’s heart no longer had to wander.
