Shi An is the current heir to Maoshan, an orphan taken in and taught all her master’s Daoist arts. Before ascending to immortality, her master entrusted her with the heavy responsibility of preserving Maoshan: “Protect Maoshan. Save all living beings.” When she first descended the mountain, she was a Maoshan disciple who knew nothing of worldly affairs and only how to vanquish demons. Her magic was peerless, but she was guileless and sincere. Strange events plagued the human world: vengeful spirits in haunted houses claimed lives, fierce ghosts clung to people and killed them, and supernatural creatures ran amok. Fortunately, she wasn’t alone. Her fox-demon best friend could read people’s hearts, her old tree-spirit friend understood the realms of yin and yang, and her ghost-catcher brother passed her information. This band of nonhuman companions joined her as she ventured through both worlds. As for the warmth and cruelty of human nature, through her repeated battles against ghosts and demons, she witnessed the good and evil in the world, shed her youthful naivete, and transformed from an innocent disciple into a Maoshan leader capable of standing on her own.
