This world isn’t as peaceful as it seems.
“Espers” have always existed. They weren’t bitten by spiders like in the comics. They were “activated” by an energy known as “spiritual energy.”
· Technological modification: Created with genetic injections in official laboratories. They’re powerful, but there’s a chance you’ll end up in a vegetative state.
· Natural mutation: Unluckily caught in a spiritual energy leak, you either awaken or drop dead on the spot.
· Inherited techniques: Developed through training by reclusive families. It’s reliable, but painfully slow.
No matter how you get your powers, using them costs you your life force.
Use them too much and you’ll suffer anything from headaches and madness to turning into a “monster” that’s no longer quite human. To keep this under control, the authorities have established a special department: the Containment Bureau.
Their slogan is simple: Register honestly, and we’ll give you suppressants to keep you alive. If you don’t, we’ll contain you.
The protagonist lives at the Dongshan Containment Center, which belongs to the Containment Bureau. On the surface, it’s an abandoned factory. Underground, it holds all sorts of problem espers and monsters.
