Xie Qizhi, a collateral-branch member of the Jinling Xie family, has mediocre talent in martial arts and is looked down on by his clan. After an accident awakens the mysterious "Martial God System," cultivation becomes a game: daily sign-ins grant internal energy, defeating villains lets him draw martial arts techniques, and completing missions directly raises his level. With the System's help, by day he is a gentle, refined scholar in white who gathers intelligence; by night, he becomes the masked, black-clad hero "Zhulong," cutting down evildoers with his sword and swiftly making a name for himself in Jinling's martial world.
While acting as a hero, he meets Liu Jing, a swordswoman from the Qingcheng Sect, and is drawn to her pure sense of justice. But the System's existence attracts the suspicion of the mysterious organization Tianji Pavilion, which upholds the traditional order of the martial world. Its leader, the "Thousand-Faced Buddha," considers the System a heresy that disrupts the transmission of martial arts and the order of the sects, and is determined to eliminate it. He sets a series of traps, framing Liu Jing for stealing a fragment of the Xie family's lost manual, the Heavenly Spirit Art, and pinning the crime on Zhulong. Liu Jing is expelled from her sect and hunted by both the righteous and the villainous factions.
To protect Liu Jing, Xie Qizhi nearly has his identity exposed. At just the right moment, the System issues its ultimate main quest: within one year, gather the nine pieces of Heavenly Spirit Jade scattered across the world, combine them to restore the complete Heavenly Spirit Art, and master it. Only then can he avert the danger of the System collapsing and turning on him, as well as clear Liu Jing's name. The rewards are enticing, but the quest is perilous, often forcing him to challenge great sects and seize their heirlooms. This creates a sharp conflict with the code of chivalry he has always upheld.
