Laozi said, "The Dao gives birth to One, One gives birth to Two, Two gives birth to Three, and Three gives birth to all things." This is a story about "stillness." Everyone else is climbing upward, while he sinks down. He sinks to the bottom of a well, to a place no one can see, and discovers that the Dao is not in the heavens. It is at the lowest point, in a dry well, on the rim where a black cat basks in the sun every day, within the body of someone everyone thinks is beyond hope. It has always been there. Everything was simply too noisy before for him to hear it.
The cultivation world is moving from Three toward all things, piling realm upon realm as they strive upward. He alone turns back at the dry well, retracing his steps toward the source, toward that "Nothingness."
