(Two female leads + an ancient assassin and a kind-hearted modern girl. No angst, happy ending.)
Jiang Yan was an assassin who couldn’t make ends meet.
She had been listed for hire at the ghost market for over ten days without getting a single job. She was so broke she couldn’t even afford a bowl of cold noodles that cost two copper coins. At last, someone hired her. The mission was simple: travel through time, and kill the first person she saw when she opened her eyes.
Then she arrived at Hengdian.
The first person she saw was Tao Nian, an extra at the very bottom of the industry, almost as broke as she was.
But Tao Nian was so popular that she could get a free meal in the cafeteria just by giving her name. She was so bold that when two groups started fighting right in front of her, she watched the whole thing and even helped clean up afterward. And she was so warmhearted that when she picked up a “costume-drama extra” of unknown origin, she took her straight home to be her roommate.
Jiang Yan held her iron sword, ate the steamed buns Tao Nian had bought on credit, lived in Tao Nian’s home, and took the jobs Tao Nian found for her.
She was torn.
Kill her? She’d be indebted to Tao Nian for all the food and kindness. If her master knew, he’d crawl out of his grave and break her legs.
Don’t kill her? Then she couldn’t go back, couldn’t complete the mission, and wouldn’t get paid.
Worse still, this world was far more complicated than she’d imagined. She wasn’t the only one who had been sent here. Other blades were waiting to be drawn in the shadows.
Schemes and danger lurked everywhere. This world was nowhere near as safe as she had thought.
And Tao Nian, who seemed carefree, always giggling as she munched on sunflower seeds, appeared to know nothing and care about nothing.
“Fine, then. My iron sword and I will protect you, always.”
