[Never butcher innocent souls] [Never spare evil spirits] [Never deceive ordinary living people] [Never cross the boundary between Yin and Yang]
Jiangcheng is a modern metropolis in the south, built along a river and woven from old and new. The old city is a maze of alleys lined with century-old homes, while the new district's skyscrapers glitter beneath neon lights all night long. The river flows through the city, gathering its Yin energy and filth. People know Jiangcheng as a prosperous, bustling city, but few realize that beneath its streets, in its old alleys and buildings, and along its riverbanks, lurk countless evil spirits, wronged ghosts, and eerie folk taboos buried by time.
Yin and Yang are meant to remain in balance: the living dwell in the realm of Yang, while the dead return to the underworld. But rapid urbanization, with its demolitions, excavated graves, destroyed ancestral shrines and temples, and reclaimed river land, has shattered a century-old order. Countless lost souls have nowhere to go, so they linger among the living, clinging to people and haunting abandoned places, giving rise to one bizarre paranormal incident after another.
There are people in this world who know neither Maoshan talismans nor heavenly magic. Armed only with ancestral rules for dealing with the dead, the taboos of everyday life, and ways to deliver people from calamity, they walk the narrow divide between Yin and Yang, dispelling evil for the living, fulfilling the wishes of the dead, and restoring order to the city's supernatural chaos. They are known as Yin Walkers.
The protagonist, Chen Yan, is Jiangcheng's last true Yin Walker of the common folk. He tends an old grocery store in the old city, soon to be demolished. He worships no ghosts or gods, deceives no spirits, and harms no living person. With only a mortal body, he faces the city's countless bizarre supernatural incidents.
