Orphan Chen Shiyi was born with a fate that brought misfortune and death to those around her. Raised from childhood by a Daoist nun at the Xuannü Temple, she carries memories of past lives and has mastered powerful inner energy. At fifteen, she takes another woman’s place in marriage to Qin Zhi, a retired soldier suffering from a deadly poison, and steps into the world of ordinary life!
Her in-laws are biased and mean, while her scholar brother-in-law and his wife are greedy. She outwits the wicked, treats her gravely wounded husband, and helps her kindhearted siblings build prosperous lives.
Clever Chen Shiyi uncovers Qin Zhi’s secret: he is a nobleman from the capital and a legendary battlefield hero. Captured after a disaster on the battlefield and imprisoned in a dungeon, he seized the chance to assume the identity of his deceased cellmate, Qin Zhi, and ended up in this rural village.
Chen Shiyi does everything she can to help Qin Zhi suppress the poison in his body, and accompanies him on a perilous journey back to the capital. When the medicine finally stops working and she sees her beloved on the brink of death, she decisively gives up all her cultivation, using her own life force to purge the poison. Her supernatural abilities vanish, leaving her an ordinary woman, while Qin Zhi unexpectedly gains powerful inner energy and comes into his own.
They had weathered hardship together over a thousand miles, and she thought their love was deep and enduring. But after they arrived in the capital, Qin Zhi left Chen Shiyi in a shabby alley on the outskirts and disappeared without a trace.
Chen Shiyi became a kept woman, the subject of gossip and pointing fingers from the neighbors.
To survive, Chen Shiyi put the knowledge and skills she remembered from a past life to use. She told stories and sang for money on the streets, sparking a new craze in the capital. It also gave the Qin family another reason to refuse to let her join them.
When the great general Qin Zhi finally returned in glory, he rejected a royal marriage decree before the court, defied the pressure of his clan, and tore away the mask of a hypocritical white lotus, all so he could keep his promise to Chen Shiyi and love her for a lifetime!
