This book is written based on the real experience of grandma Shi Xiulan. Our ancestors fled from Shandong's Ye County to Guandong. Those were the troubled times in old China, and ordinary people could not even hope to survive. As a descendant, I have now returned to Yantai, Shandong to settle down, and have witnessed the journey from the founding of New China to today's happy life. The wheat straw stacks where my grandma hid back then are now fields where crops are ripe every year; the dirt roads they walked on to beg for food are now the tracks of high-speed trains.
The country has changed. The people in this land have also changed.
I write this to let future generations know that there were people who gritted their teeth and survived like this, and that is why we have such a stable and happy life today.
