Kalen Virt only wants to do one thing: bring his younger brother, who drowned, back to life.
To do so, he secretly learns the forbidden art of silver-thread weaving. The price is that fragments of his brother’s soul become a chaotic entity living inside him, a monster that will slowly devour his consciousness.
And he can no longer shut off his mind-reading ability.
Every dark thought in every person’s mind pierces his brain like a needle: his friends’ envy, his mentor’s schemes, his enemies’ fear, strangers’ malice... even the thought buried deep in his own heart: “The truth is, I hate that my brother held me back.”
He is sent to Tower Zero at one of the seven floating academies, where he joins a rune mage consumed by revenge and a female weaver ordered to keep watch on him. The three use and deceive one another, yet the silver threads bind them ever tighter.
Told out of sequence, the story begins with Kalen imprisoned in a mirrored cell, then unfolds in flashbacks. Each chapter opens with a pivotal thought. These seemingly unrelated inner monologues eventually piece together a cruel truth: the chaotic entity is no demon, but the sum of the darkness inside every weaver.
Mind reading cannot save the world. But in your darkest hour, it can let you hear one last sentence: “I forgive you.”
