In an alternate version of Republican-era Shanghai, the heroine is a “reborn dancer.” Every near-death experience forcibly triggers a “memory flashback from the next 48 hours,” replacing her current rebirth point with the moment of her previous death. She must find the one way to keep herself alive within 48 hours. Each failure costs her a piece of her memory, until she is reduced to a beautiful shell with no past, entirely at others’ mercy. This isn’t the gift of immortality. It’s a curse counting down to the end.
