In their second year of high school, the broadcast system at Linjiang No. 1 High School broke down.
A girl clutching a broadcast script dashed into Class Seven and called from the doorway:
“Who knows how to fix the broadcast system?!”
No one could have guessed that a mishap during the school anniversary celebrations would slowly bring six people, who had never had anything to do with one another, together.
Lu Zhichuan was steady and quiet; He Beichen was quick with a joke and loved to stir things up; Gu Chengan insisted on logic; Xu Qinghe was desperate to prove herself; Su Tingwan was quiet and slow to warm up; and Shen Wanxing was like a wind that never stopped blowing.
They fixed the broadcast system together, rushed to rehearsals, got caught by the discipline committee, and worked backstage in the auditorium until dark. They shared five-jiao ice pops from Zhongjie and squeezed through the cafeteria after school and the hallways after evening study.
Shen Wanxing always remembered the little things.
She remembered who didn't eat cilantro, who had a weak stomach, and what everyone liked to drink. She always prepared her friends' birthday gifts well in advance, too.
She said:
“We've been through all that together, so of course we're friends.”
They thought their youth would last, their friendships would never end, there would be time to confess their feelings, and they would always have plenty of time to think about the future.
But growing up is never a straight path.
Some learned to fit in with the rules. Some stepped out of their shells for the first time to stand up for someone else. Some fought desperately to hold on to their relationships, while others grew more and more afraid of losing people with every goodbye.
Years later, Lu Zhichuan finally realized that some people would put you before themselves.
And some summers stay with you for years and years.
This is a story about growing up, friendship, love, and realizing things too late.
It is also a story about...
“Will we drift apart?”
