[Two Male Leads + Republican Era + Pure Love + Childhood Friends + Mild Angst]
Gentle scholar gong (Xiu Sheng) × dark-skinned laborer shou (Lin Yu)
Lin Yu and Cui Xiusheng are the poorest people in the slums. One hauls cargo at the docks; the other writes letters on a street corner. They share a bowl of porridge and hide an egg. In a leaky shack, they learn to read, and beneath a sky full of stars, they make a promise: to leave this place together, go to the provincial capital, and find somewhere bright.
Life is bitter as gentian root, but when the two of them share it, there's a little sweetness.
They don't know that in this world, poor people aren't allowed to dream. Gang warfare, gangsters hunting them down, the little sister's tragic death, their shack burned to the ground: fate takes their hopes away one by one, until all they have left is each other and a ticket for a boat they may no longer be able to catch.
This isn't a story about revenge. It's about two children in a world that devours people, fighting with all their might to survive, to protect each other, and to hold on to that last fading light called "the future."
It's a story of two people who become stars for each other in the darkness.
