In 1895, the second year after the defeat of the Sino-Japanese War, Lin Huaian became a baby of an official gentry in the late Qing Dynasty.
At the age of five he witnessed the Gengzi Revolution, at the age of sixteen he watched the Revolution of 1911, at the age of twenty-four he studied in Germany and witnessed the First World War - and then he discovered that all roads were impassable.
