On her first night shift, Lin Xiaoman receives a strange emergency call.
A woman sobs on the other end of the line:
“Officer, there's a baby crying by the river, and so many people are walking into the water!”
Lin Xiaoman thinks it's an abandoned infant case.
Until midnight, when the sign on the police station door suddenly twists out of shape.
The words “Shanhai City East District Police Station” slowly change into:
Monster Police Station.
A talking black cat sprawls across the desk. The veteran officer Lao Zhou holds his thermos and tells her:
“Welcome to your new job.”
“Starting tonight, you won't be answering 110 calls.”
“You'll be answering Monster 110.”
The crying by the river comes from Gudiao, a strange beast from the Classic of Mountains and Seas.
The buffet restaurant calls the police because Taotie has devoured three entire streets' worth of food.
The nine-tailed fox complains that humans are using her face in beauty ads without permission.
Every time Fuzhu appears, the whole city is deluged with rain.
Zhulong falls asleep facing the wrong way, throwing the whole city into a chaos of day and night.
Qiongqi applies for welfare, claiming that there are so few bad people around these days that it's nearly starved to death.
Only then does Lin Xiaoman realize that the Classic of Mountains and Seas was never a legend.
It's a household register.
Humans have police stations.
And monsters have them too…
Why doesn't anyone comment?
