In the eighteenth year of Shunzhi's reign in the Qing Dynasty, the evil disease smallpox attacked the palace and killed the emperor's beloved concubine. Shunzhi was so distraught that he decided to escape into Buddhism. At the critical moment, the Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang turned the tide, ordered the change of Zhu Biao to Xing Lan Biao, and promoted Xuan Ye, who was only eight years old after recovering from a serious illness of smallpox, to the dragon throne and became the Kangxi Emperor.
