"Journey to the West" is a long chapter-length novel about gods and demons written by the Ming Dynasty novelist Wu Cheng'en. It ranks as one of the four classic Chinese classics. The book has a total of one hundred chapters. It is based on the historical events of the Tang Dynasty eminent monk Xuanzang's journey to the West to seek Buddhist scriptures. It constructs a bizarre world of gods and demons through romantic artistic imagination. The novel has a strict structure and is mainly divided into three parts: The first part (chapters one to seven) is the introduction to the book, focusing on the birth of Sun Wukong, his quest for immortality and his legendary experience of "making havoc in heaven". The second part (chapters eight to twelve) explains the origin of Buddhist scriptures. The third part (chapters 13 to 100) is the main body of the book. It tells the story of the four masters and disciples of Tang Seng (Tang Seng, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Seng) who traveled westward and experienced ninety-nine and eighty-one difficulties. They conquered demons, overcame many obstacles, and finally arrived at the Great Leiyin Temple in Xitian to obtain the true scriptures and achieve enlightenment.
