A large family disintegrated due to a medical accident, in more than half a century of turmoil, staged an epic about crime and punishment, separation and reunion, hatred and forgiveness.
In 1948, my great-grandfather, who was highly skilled in medicine, treated the son of a squire. Because there was no concept of "skin test" in China at that time, the patient died of penicillin allergy. My great-grandfather was convicted of "manslaughter" and imprisoned.
My great-grandmother struggled to survive with her four children (grandma was the eldest daughter), and was eventually forced to remarry. As the eldest daughter, grandma was forced to grow up overnight and take on the heavy responsibility of taking care of her younger siblings.
After my great-grandma remarried, she gave birth to three daughters and a son with her new husband. Grandma had a complicated relationship with these half-siblings.
After my great-grandfather was released from prison, he found out that his wife had remarried. He was so disillusioned that he went away to a foreign country to remarry and gave birth to a son (i. E., "Uncle" who was younger than "my" father).
"My" father and mother grew up and got to know each other in the tide of the times. Grandma often mentioned her "famous doctor father who was in jail" to her father, her tone full of contradictory love and hate.
