Synopsis

"Tokyo Menghua Lu" is a documentary record of the capital city of the Northern Song Dynasty written by Meng Yuanlao of the Southern Song Dynasty. It is a precious document for studying the urban style and social life of the Song Dynasty. The author personally experienced the prosperity of Bianjing in the late Northern Song Dynasty, and recalled the past when he traveled south after the Jingkang disaster. He used plain writing to completely restore the urban layout, market conditions, customs and etiquette of Bianliang, Tokyo from Chongning to Xuanhe years. The book consists of ten volumes, detailing Tokyo's city walls, rivers, palaces and offices, streets and alleys, and describing in detail the business scene of restaurants, teahouses, tile houses and shops, markets, everything from food and drink, miscellaneous performances to weddings and funerals, and seasonal events. The book does not avoid customs and records truthfully, and fully presents the prosperity and liveliness of the capital city with a population of millions and the fireworks of people's lives. The book has both historical value and literary interest. It is not only a panoramic record of the capital society of the Northern Song Dynasty, but also an important window for future generations to peek into the secular culture, urban economy and folk customs of the Song Dynasty. It is known as the "literal version of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival".
