A stone monkey bursts forth from Flower-Fruit Mountain, proud and fearless. He wreaks havoc in Heaven and dares to challenge all the gods. Once brimming with confidence, he named himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, refusing to be bound by heavenly rules or bow to worldly convention. But five hundred years imprisoned beneath the Five Elements Mountain and a journey of 108,000 li to the Western Heaven wore away his edge and bound him with a golden fillet. In the end, he became a Buddha, worshipped on Spirit Mountain and celebrated by the world as the embodiment of the righteous path.
Everyone praises the Victorious Fighting Buddha for attaining perfect merit, yet no one knows of the resentment and emptiness in Sun Wukong’s heart. He has seen through the Heavenly Court’s power plays and Spirit Mountain’s hypocrisy. The so-called righteous path, merit, and destiny are nothing but shackles used to bind living beings and control the Three Realms. Buddhahood is no homecoming. It is a cage that erases one’s true nature and imprisons freedom.
The slumbering nature of the demon will awaken, and the last remnants of his pride will never submit. Sun Wukong resolutely tears away his Buddha’s rank and casts off his golden form, abandoning the glory and fame he has held for ages. He will no longer obey Heaven’s will or bow before the Buddhas. He returns to his untamed nature as a demon monkey.
With his golden cudgel in hand and a young hero’s spirit in his bones, he once more rises against Heaven, facing down the gods and Buddhas of the skies and defying the fate ordained for him. He seeks no Buddhahood, craves no fame, and cares nothing for everlasting merit. He seeks only to preserve his true nature and freedom. A demon in this life, he bows to neither Heaven nor Earth, pays no homage to gods or Buddhas, and lives only with defiant, open-hearted pride.
