Swallows Nest Beneath the Eaves of Fortune, and the Cold-Faced General Falls in Love

[New My Fair Princess: Xiao Yanzi × Fu Ertai]

When the imperial decree ordering her marriage arrived, Xiao Yanzi was raiding a bird’s nest in the imperial garden.

“Princess Huanzhu is to marry Fu Ertai. The wedding will take place on an auspicious day.”

The whole palace was waiting for her to throw a tantrum and defy the decree. She dusted off her hands, slipped the eggs into her purse, and knelt to receive the decree. “Fine, I’ll marry him. Who’s scared?”

Fu Ertai, the cold-faced young general, was a man of few words and many rules. On their wedding night, Xiao Yanzi slapped the table. “Let’s lay down three rules: we live our own lives and stay out of each other’s business.” He calmly poured them both a cup of tea. “Fine. There’s one thing you should know in advance: if you get into trouble out there, tell me when you get back. I’ll cover for you.”

And so it went. Xiao Yanzi caused trouble, and he covered for her. She climbed over walls, and he kept watch below. When she started a fire in the courtyard to roast meat and nearly set the side building ablaze, he came running with a bucket and put it out. Then he picked a charred sweet potato from the ashes, broke it in half, and handed her a piece. “It’s pretty sweet.”

All of the capital was saying that the Fu family’s cold-faced young general had been thoroughly wrapped around his wall-climbing princess’s little finger.

Fu Ertai wiped his sword without changing expression. “She hasn’t got me wrapped around her finger.”

“Then what is it?”

He slid his sword into its scabbard and glanced at her, swinging her legs on the swing as she ate osmanthus cakes. His voice was soft. “I’m just indulging her.”
