At the end of the Anshi Rebellion, Du Ling, a survivor of Baekje, disguised himself as a monk and returned to Beijing through the war with a special order. He was charged with a secret mission - to deliver a parchment letter with no words and only 36 notches in person to a general who had been "dead" for three years. Each notch represents an assassination that should have been successful.
