All living beings cultivate by relying on essence, energy, and spirit.

Essence is the body of flesh and bone, the foundation that supports all things. Energy is the sense of qi and the spiritual meridians, the basis for communicating with the spirit world. Spirit corresponds to consciousness and the spiritual platform, the source of enlightenment.

Everyone is born with essence and spirit. But the body is frail, and the blood and qi easily fade; consciousness is faint, making it difficult to perceive the world.

The rarest thing of all is a sense of qi.
