The protagonist Lin Shen, an ordinary civil servant, was assigned to the bureau's archives room on his first day of employment. Others thought it was a job for retirement, but he plunged into piles of historical files and stayed there for five years. In the past five years, he has read through the original files of all the strange incidents across the country, and discovered the patterns, loopholes and commonalities among them - the vast majority of "supernatural phenomena" are nothing more than rumors, coincidences, the darkness of human nature, and illusions deliberately created by a mysterious organization.
