Synopsis:

He’s only a freshman in high school, ranked somewhere in the twenties, with no family fortune behind him, just a battered bicycle that rattles everywhere except the bell.

That’s Bai Ze.

And to Fan Xiu’s father, a mine owner, he’s nothing but a “poor kid” to look down on.

During the National Day holiday, a sudden high fever sends their parallel worlds crashing into each other.

At his bedside, she’s the rich heiress clumsily making plain noodles, her eyes red as she worries he might die.

Away from his bedside, he’s the clearheaded student from a humble family who knows he isn’t good enough for her, yet swallows his anger when her father humiliates him.

“What’s wrong with being a freshman? It just means you have more potential.”

“I’ll give you a year. If you’re not in the top ten of your grade by this time next year, stay away from my daughter.”

Faced with his future father-in-law’s ultimatum, the “mine owner,” Bai Ze doesn’t argue.

Freshman year isn’t the finish line. It’s the starting line.

From tenth in his class to the top ten in his grade, from a shabby home in the old neighborhood to a top university.

On this journey, the person he has to defeat isn’t his lofty future father-in-law, but the version of himself who once settled for mediocrity.

This is a contest about poverty and dignity, arrogance and prejudice.

It is also the long story of how a “rookie” spends two years making good on his promise: “I’ll make you proud.”

[In a nutshell]
