Synopsis

"Han Shi Wai Zhuan" is a work of interpretation of Confucian classics written by Han Ying of the Western Han Dynasty. The book consists of ten volumes. It uses "The Book of Songs" as the outline and uses historical events, fables and famous sayings as the purpose to systematically expound the etiquette of poetry and the way to cultivate one's morality in politics. The book does not focus on exegesis of chapters and sentences. Instead, it connects the core Confucian concepts of loyalty, filial piety, benevolence and righteousness, propriety and wisdom, modesty, and integrity through the words and deeds of sages such as Confucius, Zengzi, Mencius, and Yanzi, and integrates the meaning of poetry with real world affairs. Each story closely follows the poetic meaning, using ancient metaphors to describe the present. It not only talks about the principles of monarch and ministers in governing the country, but also discusses the way of personal conduct, emphasizing that etiquette and justice are the foundation of the country, and self-cultivation is the foundation of life. The text is elegant and simple, and the reasoning is clear. It is not only an important document for interpreting the Book of Songs, but also a concentrated expression of Confucian enlightenment thought in the Han Dynasty. It has a profound influence on the ethical concepts and political philosophy of later generations.
