During the Zhenyuan era of the Tang Dynasty, Anxi stood isolated on the frontier.
Gu Linyuan opened his eyes to find forty-two white-haired veterans beside him, a banner bearing only half of the character “Tang,” and two thousand Tibetan cavalry closing in.
There were no reinforcements, no provisions, and Chang'an had long since forgotten them. These veterans had held their post for twenty years, until their hair turned white and their city stood alone.
They were waiting to die, but Gu Linyuan raised that tattered banner once more.
They marched west, fighting the Tibetans, Uyghurs, Indians, and Arabs, all of whom outnumbered them dozens of times over. From Suiye to Samarkand, and then to Baghdad.
They carried that half-character “Tang” onward, planting it in city after city.
When letters from this Anxi army finally reached Chang'an, the entire court wept, and the whole nation was moved.
The Tang Dynasty will never fall. The veterans will never die.
