Clutching his rattle drum, he breaks into the underworld and pulls his childhood friend’s soul from the River of Forgetfulness. But his friend attaches himself to the portrait and helps Lin Zhou’s parents clean the mourning hall. Lin Zhou ventures into the spirit realm to find his sister, who died young, but she pushes him back toward the living world: “They’re still alive.
