Lin Zhi'an, the distant niece of the Lin family in Gusu, lost her parents to illness and had no one in the family to educate her. She went to Yangzhou to join her cousin Lin Ruhai, who was the salt censor at the time.
Lin Ruhai treated her as her own child, letting her live beside Jia Min and Daiyu.
