Lin Yifeng was just an ordinary graduate student on the Sanxingdui archaeological team. One day, while working in an excavation pit, he touched a black fragment covered in unfamiliar inscriptions. The next second, he was thrown into Runeterra, another world formed from primordial source energy.
Here, Hextech coexists with ancient seals, while Void corruption breathes slowly in the depths below. The pipes of Zaun's slums wind like veins, Piltover's pristine spires pierce the clouds, Shurima's yellow sands bury the bones of the Ascended, and beneath Freljord's eternally frozen wastes lies the lament of the Forgotten. The seals on every continent are deteriorating, and behind every ancient stone gate, people are giving their lives to uphold the final line of defense.
The black runestone in his hand is the master key to every seal: a Source Point Fragment. From the miner's son who held on alone for thirty-seven years beneath the Gray Miasma Layer, to the First Guardian who endured millennia of Void corruption at the heart of the Ice Chapter's seal, every person still standing fast in the darkness silently says the same thing to him: I'll wait for you to come back.
But the forces of the Shadow Council and the Void are tracking him too. The Black Rose's shapeshifting enchantress has laid a thousand-year game on Mount Targon, while the Void faction within the Noxian expeditionary army watches from the edges of the battlefield. Lin Yifeng's choices will decide the fate of all Runeterra: continue using the lives of Guardians to suppress the Void, or remake the entire system of seals so that everyone still holding on alone in the darkness can finally go home.
This is a long journey home across all of Runeterra. He promised them he would come back.
