The year I was born, my mother had a dream. My late grandmother told her my exact birth date, said I was a boy, and claimed I had been chosen from Mount Tai. She said I would be filial to my parents and achieve great things, becoming at least a county official. Yet the first half of my life was full of hardship, and nothing ever went smoothly.
From childhood, I was haunted by strange dreams. Sometimes I visited palaces and hidden grottoes; other times, I played with dragons beneath the sea. There were even people who taught me swordsmanship and magic. I learned to command water, fire, thunder, and lightning. In my dreams, I also visited the underworld, a gloomy place that wasn't frightening. The dead lived there, but people who died by suicide were not accepted: their allotted years were not yet over, so the underworld would not take them. They were trapped in a place between the worlds of the living and the dead, where the wind howled and temperatures swung wildly between day and night. They roasted in the daytime and froze at night, with nowhere to live or hide, enduring endless torment. Many people who felt they couldn't bear life any longer chose to end it, but once they reached that place, every one of them regretted it. What's more, the underworld had no household registration, so the paper money and gold ingots burned by their families never reached them.
Sometimes my dreams took me to many realms that don't appear in mythology. There are many hidden Buddhist realms within our country, as well as Daoist ones. The beings who live there aren't immortals, but people we cannot see. They carry out various missions and protect our Earth. They come from China and from other countries, too. These dreams have run through my entire life. I also dreamed of my primordial spirit and many of my past lives. My primordial spirit is the black tortoise who serves beneath the Great Emperor Zhenwu, sent into the mortal world to undergo tribulations.
