In 1938, the Japanese army marched south along the Jinpu Line in an attempt to encircle Xuzhou. Liao Guangyi (played by Wu Jing'an), commander of the 56th Army of the Third Group Army of the National Revolutionary Army, was ordered to abandon the important town of Jinan on the Jinpu Line and retreat without a fight. His subordinate Zhou Tianyi (played by Xu Jia), the former commander of the new 1st Battalion of the Guards, finally chose justice between brotherly loyalty and national justice. He led his troops to leave Liao Guangyi and rush to the anti-Japanese front line, but was bloody surrounded and suppressed. After Zhou Tianyi led his troops to break through the encirclement, they were treated as "rebels" by the 31st Army of the Gui Clan in Mingguang and were collectively disarmed. The lives of more than 300 brothers were hanging by a thread.
