Synopsis

In the final years of the Guangxu era, outside Wuchang, Shen Yi takes over his family's estate and puts up a sign: “Eternal Scenic Realm.” Outsiders scoff. It's just a retro-style park built on land claimed by a rich young master who does whatever he wants. Only Shen Yi knows that the remains of a China lost to history for a thousand years are being summoned into this park. Qin crossbowmen practice their aim in the morning light, grumbling that the damp weather has made their bowstrings stiff. Late Tang sword troops drill on snowy nights, arguing over the price of flatbread in Chang'an's Western Market. Late Ming death warriors crouch in a corner, polishing their matchlock guns and wondering whether, once the fighting is over, they'll be able to find themselves a wife in the future. In 1937, Shanghai collapses, and a lone force on the banks of the Pujiang makes a desperate stand in a warehouse. An urgent dispatch races eight hundred li from the Eternal Scenic Area. Eight hundred garrison soldiers from different dynasties quietly fill the defensive line. That night, by the Suzhou Creek, beneath the neon lights, the foreigners see not an army, but the backbone of China, unbroken for a thousand years. After that come the bitter cold of the Gaema Plateau and the scorched earth of Shangganling. Generation after generation, the new replace the old. Only the ancient locust tree in the park puts out new shoots each year. This is an epic about staying alive. The living and the souls of the dead watch over this undying light together in the park.
