The story takes place in an imagined ancient dynasty. The protagonist, Shen Moyan, is a low-ranking clerk in the Dali Temple, responsible for organizing old case files. His father, Shen Pingchuan, was once a veteran coroner in Zhushan County, but died in an “autopsy accident” when Shen Moyan was very young. Sixteen years later, an official transfer order sends Shen Moyan from Zhushan County to the Dali Temple in the capital, changing the course of his life.
The story of a coroner’s son who solves cases with his knowledge of autopsies, investigates his father’s old case by tracking clues hidden in the files, and ultimately ventures into an underground labyrinth. There is no golden finger, no miraculous martial arts bestowed from above, and no plot armor. Every clue is painstakingly pieced together from corpses, archives, and everyday details everyone else has overlooked.
