Xu Wanqing was born into a great family in the 1960s. Her mother, Su Yun, came from a family of merchants; her maternal grandfather was a renowned doctor; her paternal grandfather’s family was steeped in learning; and her father, Xu Qiao, was a weapons researcher who had grown up abroad. To serve their country, the family decided to return. After coming home, Xu Qiao took a position in a military research department, and the family settled in the military compound. Xu Wanqing trained in both Western and Chinese medicine and graduated from a medical school abroad, then smoothly took a job at a military hospital. The family lived peacefully for several years, until disaster struck without warning. Someone reported her father, and both her parents were taken away. To save them, Xu Wanqing sought out Lu Qingzhou, the military’s most promising brigade commander. She had saved him before and had developed feelings for him. She hoped he would marry her and protect her family. Xu Wanqing thought she was making a desperate plea with little chance of success, since he might be risking his entire career. She had no idea that he had been planning this for a long time. Seizing his chance, Lu Qingzhou immediately filed the marriage application and rushed to register their marriage. The woman he loved was finally his, and everything else could be dealt with later. His intervention to protect Xu Wanqing’s parents was exactly what the leaders had hoped for. Not only did it leave his career unharmed, it also won him their favor. After her parents were released, they returned to their hometown to lie low and recover until the situation settled down. After the wedding, Xu Wanqing began building a little life of her own, keeping their home in perfect order. As she and Lu Qingzhou spent more time together, their feelings grew warmer. He had expected to marry a pampered young lady, but Xu Wanqing could operate in the OR, cook in the kitchen, practice medicine, and earn money with equal skill.
