The year Qian Shisheng married Lin Yuanfeng, she was twenty-six.

He was the Lin family's eldest grandson, a thirty-four-year-old executive at FUBUJI: restrained, solemn, and unflappable. She was the youngest daughter of a family of scholars: warm, bright, and clear-eyed. They were a perfect match, and everyone envied them.

But she knew there was someone else in his heart: Shen Zhiyi, his first love, who had moved overseas.

During their four years of marriage, she memorized all his habits: two portions of milk in his coffee, no sugar; no cilantro; and a bowl of millet porridge when he came home late. She recorded every one of his likes and dislikes in a memo, but never found her way into his heart.

Then, on the day Shen Zhiyi returned to the country, Qian Shisheng saw the emotions Lin Yuanfeng had suppressed for four years surge from his eyes like lava.

At last, she understood: some people aren't unloved because they aren't good enough. They simply were never an option for love in the first place.

She was the one who brought up the divorce. He said, “I don't agree,” but she left anyway.

Only when she had truly walked out the door did Lin Yuanfeng realize that the woman he thought wasn't hurting had been heartbroken all along, and the woman he thought he didn't love had long since become part of him.

She spent four years trying to warm his heart, without success. It took him a whole year and three months to learn how to love someone.

Fortunately, she hadn't gone far. Fortunately, this time, he finally caught up.
