The day Lin Zhuxi descended the mountain, her master stuffed her sleeves full of talismans and pills. Her three senior brothers took turns warning her that people down below were treacherous, while her fellow disciples saw her off in tears for eighteen li.
She waved goodbye with a grin, then turned and stepped into the mortal world.
Other people undergo trials to become stronger. She does it to cultivate “affection.” The cherished disciple of Yunxu Qingyan Sect and the sect leader’s proudest student had chosen a path completely at odds with her sect: the Path of Many Affections. It uses the seven emotions and six desires as the basis of cultivation. Only by experiencing the joys and sorrows of human life can one attain the Dao and ascend.
And so her cultivation began. She chased a cold-faced cultivator of the Path of Annihilation for hundreds of li, crossed blades with a female swordswoman of the Asura Path, and joined a gentle healer of the Path of All Living Things to save a fishing village. She likes teasing handsome cultivators, but never hesitates to be ruthless when the moment calls for it. What she cultivates isn’t heartlessness, but clarity: she dares to enter the fray, and she dares to walk away.
Later, she discovers that the hardest trial on the Path of Many Affections isn’t understanding other people’s feelings. It’s facing her own.
“Affection isn’t promiscuity. It means seeing every person’s pain and sorrow, then choosing to keep moving forward anyway.”
