There are thirty-six tribes on the grasslands, beneath thirty-six banners.
Every tribe has its own leader, and everyone wants to be king. The Turks have their khagan, the Tiele their sijin, the Tibetans their tsenpo, and the Uyghurs their chief. They have fought for hundreds of years, yet none has managed to swallow the others whole.
Then a Han Chinese man arrives.
He is no general and cannot fight. He is no merchant and has no money. He is no envoy, and his eloquence is merely average.
He simply sees one step further than everyone else.
That one step is what makes the people of the grasslands start calling him “King.”
