The lands of Guangdong and Fujian are a patchwork of mountain ranges, shrouded in miasma. Since ancient times, people here have respected the spirits and kept their distance.

I’ve loved traveling since childhood, wandering through the mountains and rivers of Guangdong and Fujian, listening to countless strange tales from the countryside along the way.

Demons lurking in deep forests, specters dwelling in abandoned ancestral halls, and ghosts at the bottom of moss-covered wells, unwilling to be reborn.

One New Year’s Eve, I passed through a deserted village and found a place to stay. That night, an old woman suddenly had a burst of energy before death. Grabbing my hand, she trembled as she told me all manner of eerie tales...

Applause echoed through an empty alley in the dead of night. A wronged spirit wandered beneath an old banyan tree. Wet footprints by the water led straight to my own doorstep. And an eerie coffin had somehow grown up out of the ground.

I walked and listened. Some of these stories came from lonely village inns, others from teahouses by ferry crossings.

When it comes to ghosts and spirits, they exist if you believe in them, and don’t if you don’t. But all thirty of these rural tales were recounted by people who experienced them firsthand. Come, listen as I tell them to you in detail.
